Create a Christmas Card Memory Book For A Child With Additional Needs

I don’t know about in your house, but here Christmas is one of the favourite times of the year, especially for our son James who has multiple additional needs. A month on from Christmas and James was missing the Christmas spirit, so we got him to help make a reminder that he can look at all year round!

We had saved some Christmas cards with this in mind, choosing a selection that covered several aspects of Christmas, the birth of Jesus, the tree, presents, winter animals, and a few other favourites like Santa and even a Minion (banana!)

Once we had our cards ready, we cut them to the same size. We chose a card that was about right, a red squirrel one in our case, and cut the rest down to match.

Next, we needed to laminate them. We had to be careful with some of the thicker cards, and also needed to remember that the laminator gets very hot!

Once they were all laminated and trimmed, it was time to think about how to join them all together. Using a hole punch and then looping some leather thonging through worked really well, and we tied them loose enough for them to turn easily.

The Christmas card picture book looks great! And James looks very satisfied with our work too!

Maybe you could use this simple craft activity to help your child (of any age) with additional needs to keep the Christmas spirit going all year long. And it’s fun to do too! 🙂
